    Description

This button produced by Tokio cigarettes, a very popular brand at the beginning of the 1900's. These were produced around 1910, and came free with the cigarettes. The buttons are lithographed images with a celluloid cover. Most have the paper insert from the particular brands of cigarette inside the pin's back. These buttons feature the art of the popular newspapers cartoonists at the dawning of the America's comics page. The button's artist's are the icons who's innovations lead the way to the comics we know today. This lot features the artwork of H B Martin.
Thomas E. Powers,  (1870-1939), signed TEP,  the first American to draw a color comic strip for a newspaper, joined the New York Evening World in the late 1890's. He soon became one of William Randolph Hearst's, the paper's publisher, favorite cartoonists. His political cartoons, showing Joy and Gloom, were the most notable of his work, though he had many other cartoon series including "Never Again" and "Married Life from the Inside." In addition to his cartoons he also wrote over a dozen short films.
These are for collectors of Vintage Tobacciana and Cartoon ephemera or anyone who likes
